If opposition stays limited to the five incoming senators...
...Schumer is re-elected leader comfortably.
Senate Democrats elect their leader for the new majority in a closed-door, secret-ballot vote expected in early December. Chuck Schumer needs a simple majority of the caucus, projected at 54 to 56 senators.
What's at stake: Five incoming senators have said publicly they won't back Schumer. No returning senator has said so publicly.
Next: Senate Democrats caucus vote
Date TBD
Senate Democrats should pick a new leader for the new majority.
Schumer spent the 2026 primaries backing establishment picks over the candidates voters chose. He recruited Gov. Janet Mills in Maine, and she left the race before the primary. He steered donors to Rep. Haley Stevens in Michigan and Rep. Angie Craig in Minnesota. Both lost their primaries, to Abdul El-Sayed and Peggy Flanagan. Stevens then endorsed the Republican. Some of his own Senate colleagues questioned that strategy publicly.
When Democrats last held the Senate, abortion rights were never written into law. In May 2022, with a 50-50 Senate and the Supreme Court about to overturn Roe v. Wade, the Women’s Health Protection Act failed 49 to 51, with every Republican and Sen. Joe Manchin voting no, and far short of the 60 votes the filibuster requires. Democrats did not change the filibuster rules to pass it. Roe fell weeks later with no federal protection in place.
On Israel, he has not moved with his party. In a February 2026 Gallup poll, 65 percent of Democrats said they sympathize more with Palestinians, against 17 percent with Israelis. In April 2026, 40 Senate Democrats voted to block a sale of military bulldozers to Israel and 36 voted to block a bomb sale. Schumer voted against both, as he did in July 2025, when he said security assistance to Israel "is not about any one government but about our support for the Israeli people."
His leadership has also cost the party trust with its own voters. In March 2025 he supplied the votes to pass a Republican funding bill that most Democrats opposed, and Indivisible called on him to step aside. In a June 2026 Politico poll, 47 percent of likely Democratic voters said he should not remain leader, against 28 percent who said he should. Five of the incoming Democratic senators have said they will not back him.
The new majority needs a leader the new class trusts.

Private, secret ballot. Expected in early December.
If opposition stays limited to the five incoming senators...
...Schumer is re-elected leader comfortably.
If returning senators start joining the opposition...
...a challenger becomes viable and the secret ballot turns competitive.
Vote math
If every senator in the Democratic caucus without a clear no votes for Chuck Schumer, that is 49 votes. That clears the 28 needed.
The undecided can shift it. If all 1 undecided members voted no along with the clear no votes, Chuck Schumer would have 48, which still clears 28.
For the no votes to matter, they have to push Chuck Schumer below the line. That takes 27 senators in the Democratic caucus voting for someone else (22 more than the 5 with a clear no today).
